Fuck waking up at 5am. It’s stupid “success porn” that doesn’t make you in some way superior or more successful. Contrary to what the HUSTLE BRO!!! gurus tell you.
Why might you start waking up at 5am?
Waking up at 5am does have some benefits. There’s 2 that I can identify. Aside from these things, I personally think it’s a load of B.S.
Waking up at 5am is beneficial for developing discipline. It’s hard to wake up at 5am, especially if you’re not a natural morning person. Doing uncomfortable things will develop your disciple; just like taking cold showers, making your bed and mastering complex exercises.
If this is your reason for doing it, go right ahead and have at it.
The other benefit is for people who have kids, and before they wake up being the only part of the day you get some peace and quiet to get on with things, without little monsters running around everywhere. If you have a young family then you’re probably more likely to stay in on your evenings and go to bed early, so it fits even better. Again, if that works for you have at it.
Why waking up at 5am is dumb
You don’t ‘gain more hours in the day’. That’s retarded. A day is 24 hours long for everyone. It’s one of the few things in this world which are genuinely equal.
If you’re not able to get your work done or focus throughout the day because you get distracted by your phone or email, that is your problem. Turn it off or don’t look at them.
If you have a job and other humans are distracting you, you’re getting paid for it, so who cares? If you want to get more of your own stuff done, then don’t have a job.
Of course, if you’re working on your exit plan and getting up early to fit your private work in, before you go to the office, that is perfectly valid and effective.
I’m not saying you shouldn’t wake up at 5am, or that it is somehow bad. I am saying…
If you don’t want to wake up at 5am…don’t!
It doesn’t make you somehow superior. You can still be successful if you like to sleep in. The world might even still respect you as a fellow human being (hopefully).
Look, if waking up at 5am serves you, then do it. If you’re naturally a morning person, or you have good reason to do it, then do it.
But if you don’t, and you’re sick of hearing people bang on about getting up to ‘hustle’ – another retarded success porn word – then don’t do it. It’s ok.
Why you might not want to wake up at 5am
Apart from how miserable it is getting up while it’s still dark – and you could make the argument it goes against your circadian rhythm; the light is supposed to wake you – there’s good reason not to wake up at 5am.
Assuming you need an average 8 hours sleep, it means you have to go to bed at 9pm. Who the fuck wants to go to bed at 9pm?
It’s cool if you’re middle-aged and completely settled in your family life I suppose. But if you’re young, like to have a social life and sex life, well; it isn’t gonna happen.
Think about it; you go out for dinner with friends, you will eat at 9pm. You go on a date, you go out at 9pm. Night out? You’re just thinking about getting ready at that time. You can’t possibly have a social life or a sex life, and go to bed at 9pm.
Of course, you can just under sleep, but that soon catches up with you. Not to mention being chronically tired is likely going to ruin any benefits you get from being up earlier anyway.
If you’re doing it for a short time then it’s fine to not have a social life. If you’re really driven and working on something for a month or two, that’s cool. Use it as a tool to achieve your goals. But over the long term? It’s completely incompatible.
Why do I care?
The reason I care about this is because I see people lauding it over others, like it makes them superior. You’re not. It just makes a lot of people miserable. I wonder how many people are living that lifestyle, and they’re fucking lonely because they have cut off their ability to have a social/sex life… for what?
What’s the fucking point if it’s making your miserable?
Do what works for you. If you happen to be a morning person and want to be waking up at 5am every day, that’s great. For the rest of us, let’s wake up when we want to wake up, and still have just as many hours in a day…shall we?
Not ever having an alarm clock again moved the needle more on my general happiness and well being more than almost anything else. After 5 years of having no choice but to get up in the cold and dark (and getting back home in the cold and dark too), it’s a huge relief to sleep as much as I need, and wake naturally.
