The Angkor Muscle Gym is the best gym in Siem Reap, for travelers and locals alike. It is home to the Angkor Body Building Association (acronym ABBA (seriously)). It is a great gym, very bodybuilding oriented, with superb equipment and atmosphere.
The gym in Siem Reap is equipped with:
- Plenty of barbells and plates
- Heavy (and light) dumbbells
- Squat racks
- Smith machines
- Pull up/dip stations
- Leg press
- Cable machines
- Bench press
- Incline & decline benches
- Various machines for every body part
- Treadmills, bikes and all the usual cardio equipment
The thing most lacking is good floor space to deadlift. You can do them, but it can get crowded around you.
How to find the gym in Siem Reap
The gym is just over the river from the center (pub st, night market). The address is:
House 0471, Watdamnak Village, Salakomreuk Commune, Siem Reap
There is no membership structure or anything, it simply costs $1 per workout.
No time limit or anything. It is an absolute steal. I have found that gyms are generally expensive, relative for Asia, but this is one of the best I have been to and also one of the cheapest.
My opinion of the gym in Siem Reap
The best body building gym I have been to in South East Asia.
It is extremely well equipped, it has everything you could want from a body building gym and next to none of the (large) space is wasted on superfluous equipment.
The atmosphere is friendly and motivating. All of the guys train with their shirts off, which is more functional than vanity I think, but don’t let that intimidate you.
The locals train hard and tend to be lean, but none of them are very big.
The one downside is that there is no air con. It gets very hot. Hence the no shirt thing. If you’re unaccustomed to the Asian heat, it will be a killer. My opinion is once you’ve acclimatised, a bit of sweat won’t kill you.
